Leave your religion at church friend; it’ll be there safe and sound,
It causes many problems when you take it into town.
You may take a little home, just a little here and there,
Enough to keep the kids in-line, to keep them out your hair.
Jesus said to take your cross if you would follow Him,
But make sure you get a light one, don’t hurt your back now, friend.
There’s lots of crosses at the church, there’s one there just for you,
But leave it there until next week when your Sunday chore is through.
That certainly is commendable to hold that cross that day,
But to tote that thing all week long, I wouldn’t think of it, no way!
The Bible is a lovely book there sitting on church shelf,
But the whole thing is for other folks, there’s not much for yourself.
Lots of thee’s, thou’s and those, words that make no sense,
Written from so long ago it won’t apply to present tense.
The Lord is in His temple, you’d do best to leave him there,
For if you bring him home, my friend, your whole life He’ll impair.
All the things you love to do, you’ll have to put them down,
There won’t be fun of any kind as long as He’s around.
But you can see Him at the church on Sunday once a week,
If He cannot make it that day, no prob, I’ll gladly speak.
When you go to church each week you put on special clothes,
You fix your hair, don polished shoes and smell just like a rose.
But you don’t go to work like that or prance around the house,
If you did your friends would think your mind it has gone south.
So why bring all that church stuff home, that’s crazy don’t you think?
You take food out of the icebox and it will start to stink.
Leave it there where it belongs, that’s what a church is for,
It could be a big problem if you bring it out the door.
Once a week is more than enough for the things of God,
But maybe this Sunday morning, we’ll just lay in bed and nod.

A note about “A Place for Safekeeping”: I think if we were all honest we would probably admit to having one “standard” of values we employ in church or amongst our church friends and another we have at home, work and on the street. For most of us the change may only be subtle. We all know people who have that Jekyll and Hyde persona. Can we evaluate our relationship with God based on our worst behavior? Is the rest just an eminence front? I’m sure Satan does a brisk business with all two-faced behavior. Not only is it extremely detrimental to those hiding behind the mask(s), but it also raises the doubts of all those who witness this charade. Jesus told us to take up our cross. How much a part of Himself did He give when He picked His up for us?
