Little Dave faced a giant, though he was small and all alone,
Without any armor or a sword, with only a sling and little stone.
The King called for his armor for little Dave to wear,
But Dave, he was not used to it, and it was more than he could bear.
So Dave went out and faced this beast, Goliath was his name.
This giant had so much armor he’d put a tank to shame.
Little Dave took off in double time in this brute’s direction,
And found a place tween giant eyes where this ogre lacked protection.
Davey knocked him off his feet with one stone to the head,
Then he took the giant’s sword and made sure that he was dead.
Now Dave was not as vulnerable as the story did appear,
His protection came from God Himself; the boy he had no fear.
The belt of truth around his waist this youngster didn’t lie,
He said God would deliver him; Dave’s power came from high.
The breast plate was of righteousness, a quite important part,
For God declared this little boy was after His own heart.
Upon his feet the peace of God, that steps out by His grace,
His shield of great protection, in God he put his faith.
A helmet of Salvation that every head should wear,
For when our life’s eternal, no man should give us scare.
Young Davey had a hidden weapon, a highly polished sword,
More powerful than an army, it was the Word of the Lord.
Prayer was his mainstay; he used it every day,
For defense and for offense, every minute we should pray.
So David was not as stupid as he appeared to be,
A battle hardened soldier though by looks you couldn’t see.
And we too fight an invisible foe, Satan is his name,
The accuser points his finger and magnifies our shame.
But we have the same armor that Dave, the boy, he wore,
And we can fight an army of demons when they knock upon our door.
But you must now remember the armor’s from God above,
And it’s up to you to put them on, as you would don a glove.
A glove within your pocket won’t protect your hand,
And if you don’t put God’s armor on, it won’t protect the man.
So wear it with humility, for your strength is not your own,
It comes from Him Who has all power, Who reigns from heaven’s throne.
And you will have a victory, there’s no way you can lose,
But to wear God’s great protection, it’s up to you to choose.
Tertius
Therefore put on the full armor of God,
so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground,
and after you have done everything, to stand.
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist,
with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith,
with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
Ephesians 6:13-18
A note about “Battle Ready”: I was amazed when I realized I’d been doing a Bible Study at a jail for a year and a half before having a lesson on the armor of God. That’s like sending someone off to war with a flyswatter and a bottle cap for a shield. What was I thinking? What a battleground that place is! Lots of hand to hand combat and I’m not talking about the physical kind but the kind that harms our souls. If you think it’s tough to follow Jesus where you’re at, you have no idea of what it’s like in the midst of concentrated evil. It will either make you or break you. I get the feeling some “Church-goers” don’t much care for “ex-offenders” but, those whose faith have survived the fire of incarceration come forth as gold (Job 23:10). Take note that if you’re not in combat with forces of darkness it might just be that they already have you whipped!
