I saw a little lizard on the church house wall,
The building huge and grand, the lizard oh so small.
I couldn’t help but notice in my multicolored friend,
The craftmanship displayed on and ‘neath his skin.
Tiny bones held together by tiny muscles too,
He laughs at laws of gravity, climbing walls is what he’ll do.
For a little fellow he sure is fast, darting here and there,
High upon his sunny perch, he doesn’t have a care.
His tail is his protection, he can leave it all behind,
Cause when I tried to catch him, his blue tail became mine.
Quite a handsome fellow if ever there ever was,
Built by His Maker with greatest grace and greatest Love.
Though this building is a temple, spectacular and grand,
It was built to honor God; its builder was but man.
Built with wood, glass and brick, constructed with great care,
After standing for 300 years it had begun to wear.
Humans are only temporary, and their handiwork is too,
Maintenance is mandatory, a building will not remain as new,
Bricks will crack and wood will rot like earthly things all do.
But its beauty is still stable after all this time.
Yes, its beauty can’t compare to this little lizard’s shine,
For God has gave this little fellow breath and blood and life,
And this building was constructed by merely earthly price.
This building it is good for God’s honor it imparts,
But nothing man can make can compare with God’s own art.
This lizard speaks God’s glory as every star up in the sky,
But men view their own handiwork as glory in their own eye.
So put your pride to the side and see what God has made,
And the earthly things that men’s hands bring will surely start to fade.
So, if you see a lizard and he’s looking back at you,
It could be that he’s thinking what great art that God can do.
Tertius
A lizard can be caught with the hand,
yet it is found in kings’ palaces.
Proverbs 30:28
A note about “Liz:” I was putting in a sidewalk at an Episcopal Church close to my home that was over 300 years old (the building) when I saw a lizard on the wall. In an instant I realized the craftsmanship, artistry and engineering found in this little creature far exceeded that found in this old and grand structure. I knew the Lord had words coming my way, so I took the picture. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but perspective puts it all into focus.
