Spirit of Vengeance, spirit of hate,
Stay outside my door, outside my gate.
For God’s Spirt of Love resides in my heart,
There’s no room for another in the smallest of parts.
You knock on the door, but I won’t let you in,
You claim to have comfort, claim you’re a friend.
You call out my name and your pull it is strong,
But when I call forth God’s Word you will not knock long.
Evil’s a cycle and a great binding chain,
But to break it with love stops its cycle of pain.
Now vengeance belongs to the Lord God alone,
And hatred unchecked makes our hearts hard as stone.
Like cancer it eats the soul from within,
And a grudge harms its holder not whom it intends.
Have you suffered as Jesus who died on the cross?
Whose death was our gain at such a great cost?
Does this life hold more value than an eternal soul?
Is a human worth more than all the world’s gold?
Forgiveness is not cheap; it costs us our pride,
But as we forgive others in Christ we abide.
Love is our law, and our example was shown,
By the greatest forgiver the world’s ever known.
To know Him is to love for He’s forgiven me too,
And what He’s done for me He will do for you.
But beware of the knocking again at your door,
The hatemonger’s back to hound you some more.
“You can’t be forgiven for such a vile sin,”
He says with an evil, devious grin.
But Christ suffered in Love for sin small and great,
And if you are still breathing then it’s not yet too late.
As so we forgive, so we are forgiven,
And as we bury all hate God’s Love’s in us and livin’!
Tertius
For we know him who said,
“It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”
and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”
It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Hebrews 10:30-31
A note about “Vengeance (Sharp Sword Without a Handle”: After being threatened with a butt kicking by a former employee (who worked for my business) and not only that but was cussed, taunted, called a Christian hypocrite and called out to “settle it like a man.” The part of me that held to good sense and reason (and I’m ashamed to say my reason was more about not wanting to go to jail rather than following Jesus’ example) kept me from doing something rash, hasty and stupid. But the part of me that was an egotistical male felt like a dog on a gunpowder diet. What really troubled me was the desire along with fantasies, that if I had chosen to dwell on, could have come to pass as payback. Satan always has more than one reason to justify such action. He’s been inciting nations to wars and individuals to murder for thousands of years, and he’s not done yet. As Jesus did, the sword we must use is God’s Word in our fight with Satan and with our own carnal “Parts.” Do not forget God’s Word also says to pray continually (I Thessalonians 5:17). Resist the devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7). Some things are easier said than done and this is certainly one. It cannot be done without God’s help.
