Story Time

This email was sent as an invitation to attend a meeting at Joel’s home. Although the meeting has come and gone, the content of the email may be of interest to readers.

There are many stories in the Bible of a wide variety of subjects. Some enlightening basic truths and some I just don’t understand at all. For instance, Jacob receiving his father’s blessing gained through flat out deceitfullness.

For our next Bible-human interaction study (for lack of a better term) I’d like to hear participants sharing a Bible story that is similar to an event or story in their own personal lives. Maybe a story that influenced them in some way, but especially in a physical sense. Here again we’re trying to examine the Word of God in a here and now mode rather than the hereafter. And by “here and now” I mean experiences of our lives whether it was something 50 years ago or something we use day to day. For example, I could compare parts of my life to the story of the Prodigal Son. My story identifies with the original so much it would almost be redundant to tell it. Besides that I have other examples I can share more in line with where I am presently. Parables from the mouth of Jesus, Old Testament stories, (My Dad told me once he was moved profoundly by the story of Daniel, I don’t know the details maybe my Momma knows) to historical information from the Gospel regarding the life of Jesus on this earth or perhaps something from the Book of Acts involving the early church. If you can think of something in your life that is somehow relevant to some of these, let’s hear it. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of possibilities. However if you have a story similar to Isaiah walking around barefoot and naked for three years, you might want to pick another story. We will have five loaves, and two fish for a snack. Be sure and bring some baskets for your doggie bag.

Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; He did not say anything to them without using a parable. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet. “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”
Matthew 13:34-35 (Psalm 78:2)

What we have heard and known what our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, we will tell the next generation the praise worthy deeds of the Lord, His power and the wonders He has done.
Psalm 78:3-4
