Our Singing Saviour

I read some words the other day that conflicted with my thoughts,
In all my years in Sunday School these words I’d not been taught.
That God He is a singer and we can hear Him too,
Was the writer half past crazy or could such a thing be true?
Singing is for praising Him; we worship in this fashion,
Expressing joy with every note we reveal our love and passion.
Music is a created thing from man, who’s made of sod,
Though wonderful it can’t compare to the glory of our God.
As my mind stumbled in the box it oft resides,
Its thoughts of God singing out the notion it derides.
But soon I heard a whistle of the wind within the trees,
The breath of God plays a tune, a woodwind in the breeze.
The rhythm of the rain, it keeps a steady beat,
The crashing of the ocean waves unto my ear a treat.
A little bird so tiny with his song as strong as thunder,
The rolling of a babbling brook it sings in liquid wonder.
But all of these created things are not from the Creator’s tongue,
What I would hear so loud and clear is a song from His mouth sung.
When questions come as they all do He shows us where to look,
Inside His answer to all we need His Holy precious Book.
I did not have to open it for its words I already wrote,
Lying on my nightstand His words that He had spoke.
The beauty of them filled my soul and I wrote them down in rhyme,
And as He gave me melody they took on a rhythm and time.
His word declares that those who love Him are the body of the Christ,
His hand, His feet, His mind complete on earth we are His Life.
If this we do, it must be true we also are His voice,
To keep it quiet or sing out loud is all believers’ choice.
So if we be His body; His lips, His mouth, His tongue,
Then every time we sing it’s just like God has sung.
It only goes to show, where there’s a will there is a way,
And narrow minded folks like me can learn something every day.
Though my singing is not so great the angels have me beat,
I hear His song within my heart and nothing is more sweet!

Tertius

The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.
Zephaniah 3:17

A note about “Our Singing Savior”: In a church newsletter I saw some words of encouragement from the choir director that made reference to God singing. I’ve been told there is no scriptural reference to verify that angels sing and though we “hear” the voice of God many different ways the notion of God singing seemed way out there and I knew of no scriptural reference. Picking this newsletter up from the coffee table where it wouldn’t get thrown out I carried it in my bedroom and while it was still in my hand I looked on my nightstand and saw a copy of the poem “Fireproof” which God had also most graciously given me a most delicious melody. Three of the four lines of the chorus are word for word, God’ Word. Now if we are the Body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:27) when we sing to Him, for Him, about Him then we must consider it to be God singing. Even though I consider myself like Moses, a man of feeble lips, God told him “no excuse”. He has also told me the same thing. What really nailed it for me was the scripture verification that I found while looking for a Bible verse that fit the poem. Zephaniah 3:17. What a surprise!
