A Conversation Over Drinks

I’ve anguish of my soul for death will be my end,
And who shall pay the cost, the price of my own sin.
Payment will be due upon the day I die,
It’s too late now to change my ways, it’s much too late to try.
Hell is just a fabrication born from an ignorant mind,
And on the day we die nothing’s what we’ll find.
If God were real I’m sure you’d feel some sign of His existence,
And even though you’d like to know your heart puts up resistance.
I think I’ll just sedate myself and find some shelter from the pain,
And numb this tortured soul of mine and ease my troubled brain.
Hey there bro, don’t you know the Bible tells of just the cure,
It’s bound to blow your blues away this remedy is sure.
Alcohol will kill it all, the sorrow of your soul,
To vanquish all your problems, wasn’t that your very goal?
I see just what you’re saying, it’s in Proverbs thirty-one six,
Now I have the best of reasons to get my alcohol fix.
So fill my cup and bottoms up, here’s a toast to feeling jolly,
Although God’s Word clearly states that too much booze is folly.
Now don’t you see you belong to me, forever you’re my slave,
And all you have ahead of you is death and cold deep grave.
The Book says those who’re perishing should grab a good stiff drink,
And you, my friend, are going down, no matter what you think.
My Bible says God Loved the world so much He sent His Son,
And those who do believe on Him won’t perish, no not one.
Now that relieves my anguish, so much better than strong booze,
For every time I’m drunk I find I never fail to lose.
Get behind me, Satan, you must take me for a fool,
For I have learned that alcohol is the worst of your evil tools.
I think I’ll go with Jesus wherever He may lead,
Because He Loves me oh so much for me He’d even bleed.
The liquid Flood of His own Blood it gives eternal life,
Unlike your reasons and old corn squeezin’s that only cause great strife.
I now have hope instead anguish within my joyous heart,
So if you’d like to drink today don’t wait on me, just start.
For those who’re doomed to hell like you should drink while they still can,
For alcohol has caused many to fall and miss God’s saving plan.
His saving plan is Jesus, who makes my soul fly high,
And though He changed the water to wine, I think I’ll let that slide.

Tertius

Let beer be for those who are perishing, wine for those who are in anguish! Proverb 31:6

A note about “A Conversation Over Drinks”: One of the inmates in Bible study presented the idea that since he had been homeless for the past twenty years that he has an “anguish of heart”, therefore on the basis of Proverbs 31:6 he felt that it was his religious freedom to get drunk. I found I was wasting my time trying to argue with him, so I wrote the poem. However he was released before I could give him a copy. I take this verse to be referring to someone on their deathbed. As an alcoholic for many years I know all the trouble that comes from drinking. He might fool himself with pulling a verse out of context, but I’m more than familiar with being a slave to addictions and I know the freedom found in Christ and there is no comparison to those two lifestyles.
