Sinners & Winners

Old blind brother John’s never seen the light of day,
And ever since his day of birth, it’s always been that way.
But faith is his vision and Jesus is his way,
And every morning when he rises, this is what he prays:
“A sinner’s what I’ve been, but a winner’s what I’ll be,
And on the day I fly away, my Savior I shall see.
The darkness it will run, from the glory of the Son,
And in His bright, majestic light, my world of black is done.”

Helen couldn’t hear a thing, neither thunder, nor a shout,
Never heard a melody, didn’t know what it’s about.
But her faith it heard a still small voice and Jesus was His name.
And every night before she’d sleep her prayer was the same:
“A sinner’s what I’ve been, but a winner’s what I’ll be,
And on the day I fly away, my Savior sings to me.
And I will sing along with a mighty joyous throng,
My ear will reap; silence won’t keep the splendor of the song.”

Smitty was the silent type; he never said a word,
And from his mouth, not a sound was never, ever heard.
But faith in his heart, told what he had to say,
And though he never moved his lips, in his mind he’d pray:
“A sinner’s what I’ve been, but a winner’s what I’ll be,
And on the day I fly away, I’ll shout for joy you’ll see.
And I will up and say, all the words so long at bay,
As they come from my tongue, on that glorious day.”

Now me I had a granite heart, cold and hard as stone,
I was evil and was wicked and nasty to the bone.
But faith came along one day and changed this man of clay,
And I give constant thanks to Jesus, every time that I do pray:
“A sinner’s what I’ve been, but a winner’s what I’ll be,
And on the day I’ll fly away, a new heart will beat in me.
A heart so pure that’s for sure, washed with Jesus’ blood,
He cleaned all stains, erased the pain, by His own crimson flood.”

Now all of us long for the promise of our God,
When our souls return to Him and these tents unto the sod,
Faith is our hope; as we wait upon that day,
And when we think of Jesus, this is what we pray:
“A sinner’s what I’ve been, but a winner’s what I’ll be,
And on the day I fly away, Jesus sets us free.
And one day we will live, with new bodies that He’ll give,
The old is done, the news begun, for all those that are His.”
Are you?

Tertius

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain,
for the old order of things has passed away.”
He who was seated on the throne said,
“I am making everything new!”
Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Revelations 21:4-5

A note about “Sinners and Winners”: What a difference one consonant can make. What a difference Jesus can make.
