DEATHGRIP

Old man Midas was a greedy soul,
He loved his silver and he loved his gold.
He couldn’t resist that money’s pull,
Lined his pockets till they were full.
And full they were when he went for a swim,
He wouldn’t let it go and it drowned poor him.
What shall a man gain from his gold.
When it steals your life and takes your soul?

Brother Buzz loved to get high,
To get his fix he’d steal and lie.
He felt no pain when he was numb,
He didn’t care if it made him dumb.
We went too far and crashed and burned,
Too late now for him to learn.
What shall a man gain from a high,
When it costs your soul and makes you die?

Sweet Moe he loved every girl,
Not satisfied till he’d conquered the world.
One woman could never be enough,
To fill his want and horny lust.
When he got caught with his friend’s wife,
His jealous friend took his life.
What shall a man gain from sex,
When it destroys your soul and your body wrecks?

So, what’s your poison, you hold so tight,
With all your power, all your might.
Do you love it more than Christ?
Does it’s brief pleasure consume your life?
For a piece of crap would you hurt God’s heart?
Would you let it keep you and God apart?
What shall a man gain from his desire,
When the wealth of the world becomes smoke in the fire?

I’ve chased rainbows of every kind,
And the only One I’d ever find
Was Jesus Christ who saved my soul,
Broke chains of want, which did me hold.
He satisfies in every way,
He meets my needs when I pray.
What shall I gain when faith I hold,
Eternal life for my unworthy soul.

Tertius

For what will it profit a man
if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?
Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Matthew 16:26

A note about “Death Grip”: A question to be asked; is it by our own hands that we keep this “death grip” or is it these idols we hold that have a “death grip” on us? When we think of idol worship sometimes we picture primitive people bowing down to a carved stone, but modern mankind demonstrates a much more dedicated form of worship to its many various idols. Although all things were created by God and He declared them to be very good (Genesis 1:31) it is man that made these created things idols by giving them a place in his heart that should be reserved for God.
