Buena Vista (Past, Present, Future)

I stand on a mountain, a mountain of gold,
I give it out freely, cause it cannot be sold.
I’m up from the valley, where I almost gave up.
I drank the devil’s own brew from the devil’s own cup.
But I’ve been forgiven and I’m finally free,
From the terrible burden that I put upon me.
God’s Love has rescued my broken down soul,
By the Power of Jesus and His words of pure gold.

I stand on a mountain, a mountain of bread,
The whole world is starving, dying to be fed.
I don’t understand it I’m rolling in dough,
And the hungry pass by like they don’t even know.
Now my mind and my soul eat the Fruit of God’s Spirit,
And now I’m just lookin’ for people who’ll hear it.
God’s Love has rescued my broken down soul,
By the Mercy of Christ and His Words of pure gold.

I stand on a mountain, a mountain of Love,
It came down from Heaven, from Heaven above.
I was blind in the darkness, the darkness of sin.
There’s misery and torment, when the devil’s your friend.
Now my friend is Jesus, who was there all along,
Waitin’ for me and now to Him I belong.
God’s Love has rescued my broken down soul,
By the Grace of our Savior and His Words of pure gold.

I stand on a mountain, the mountain of God,
He leads me in comfort with His staff and His rod.
I rode a hard highway that was leading to hell,
Now I’m back on God’s path with a story to tell.
Christ died for sinners and I was the worst,
We will one day be winners when we put Jesus first.
God’s Love has rescued my broken down soul,
By the Spirit of Jesus and His mountain of gold.

Joel Emerson

Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown.
But whoever has been forgiven little, loves little.
Luke 7:47

This is the only poem not signed by Tertius. (See “Who Is Tertius?” for an explanation.)

Here’s the story behind “Buena Vista”:
“Buena vista” I started by thinking about some kids that had quit coming to Sunday school, but as I got into it I found out it was about myself. I wrestled that one for a week. I am sure God had plenty of input but it didn’t flow like the rest of them. That one I was given music to. The night before I had watched Billy Graham and a show on Jeff Lynn who was the leader of Electric Light Orchestra, one of my favorite composers. On the way to work I was thinking how cool it would be to combine their gifts, and by the time I got to work I had the tune. Was I thinking or praying? Sometimes I start writing with a certain thought in mind and things end up in a surprising place.
