Bed of Roses, Bed of Nails

Everything points to God, from a tiny sparrow’s melodious song,
To the orbit of earth six hundred mill long, everything points to God.
Everything speaks of His Love, from the beauty of nature we behold with our eye,
To His suffering Son who for sinners did die, everything speaks of His Love.
Everything reveals His glory from the stars in the sky, each one a sun.
To a baby’s soft cry, yes we were all one, everything reveals His glory.
Everything shows His mercy, from the great sin of the world, that continues to turn,
To the gifts He gives men whose Love they do spurn, everything shows His mercy.
But one thing’s a picture of how things should be
Between our Maker and His people you see.
Marriage the union of a woman and man,
It is God’s purpose, it is God’s plan.
For richer, for poorer, for better for worse,
We trust, love and obey till we ride in the hearse.
When God joins us together, two hearts become one,
Oh what a joy this implies when life it is done.
Things might seem dark and dirty at best,
But God has a plan; perhaps it’s a test.
The vows that we take, the vows that are spoken,
We must keep to the end, they must not be broken.
Some people say that it’s just paper, only a written note,
But that’s not what God said, don’t be misled, that’s not what God has wrote.
They say we can share a bed free as any old bird,
But it’s no freedom it’s slavery according to God’s word.
Commitment is what He wants from all of His people,
It points into His direction more than any church steeple.
If we can’t be trusted with mere earthly things,
Would God call us His bride and give us a ring?
Marriage is holy and Almighty God, He is too,
And when it comes to our bodies we must remain true.
A shadow of the Love He displayed on the cross,
What we give to our mates, is all gain and not loss.
So treat it as sacred and remain in its bounds,
Don’t venture outside where trouble is found.
Some folks have fallen to the curse of divorce,
Eggs can’t be unscrambled we know this, of course.
But if you are not them, then keep this in mind,
God can keep what is His and He will every time.
What He joins together let no man part,
And make sure that you’re married before the games start.

Tertius

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified:
that you should avoid sexual immorality;

That each of you should learn to control his own body
in a way that is holy and honorable,

Not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;
and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him.
The Lord will punish men for all such sins,
as we have already told you and warned you.

For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God,
who gives you his Holy Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 4:3-8

A note about “Bed of Roses, Bed of Nails”: So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? (Luke16:11) Wise words of Jesus not used by Him in the context of marriage but they certainly can relate to this God-ordained institution. With the high rate of divorce and an even higher rate of couples who want to live together without marriage or the increase of people who see nothing wrong with having multiple partners while looking for “Mr./Miss Right” the standards of what is wrong and right are in a tailspin. This departure from God’s code has even infected the modern church as certain denominations allow and condone sexual immorality like never before. Abortion, Aids, broken homes and an ever-widening gulf between God and man are just a few of the horrors directly tied to this sin that society has come to accept as normal. Even if it is normal for the world, it is an abomination for the church to let this “yeast” into its “dough.” But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s Holy people. (Ephesians 5:3)
